Extracting minerals allows you to gain mining experience points, which enable you to upgrade your Pickaxe. After extraction, ores require processing in a smelting process, performed by a guild alchemist. The process of refining ore involves a fee in game currency and the use of Magic Dust. The materials obtained in this way are referred to as refinements, and only in this form are they used in further game mechanics.
